Final Expense (Burial) Insurance for Tennessee Families

Final expense insurance pays your family cash for funeral costs and final bills, so they don't have to.

Final expense insurance, also called burial insurance, is a small whole life policy that pays your family cash for funeral costs and final bills. The benefit usually runs $5,000 to $25,000. The premium never goes up, and most plans don’t require a medical exam.

At Upper Cumberland Life & Health, we set these policies up for Tennessee families from our Cookeville office and by phone or video in all 95 counties. We shop 20-plus A-rated carriers, so you’re not stuck with whichever company mailed you a postcard first.

What Final Expense (Burial) Insurance Pays For

The money goes to the person you name as beneficiary, not to a funeral home. Your family decides where it goes. Most use it for four things:

  • The funeral or cremation: service, casket or urn, and the funeral home’s fees.
  • Burial costs: the cemetery plot, opening and closing the grave, and the headstone.
  • Final medical bills: the balances Medicare and supplemental coverage leave behind.
  • Small debts: a credit card, a car payment, or a utility bill nobody else should have to cover.

What a Funeral Costs in Tennessee

A traditional funeral with burial in Tennessee commonly runs $8,000 to $10,000. Cremation with a service is often $5,000 to $7,000. Those numbers rise most years. And the bill is due within days, when your family is least ready to deal with it.

Without a plan, that cost lands on your children or your spouse. Some families put it on a credit card. Others take money out of savings they were counting on. A final expense policy settles the question ahead of time.

How Final Expense Policies Work

Carriers sort applicants by health. Which kind of policy you qualify for decides how fast the full benefit starts. You can read more about the other policy types on our life insurance page.

Level Benefit (Full Coverage From Day One)

If your health is reasonably good, you answer a short list of health questions. There’s no exam. If you’re approved, the full death benefit applies from the first day. This option usually costs the least for the same amount of coverage.

Graded Benefit

If you have a more serious condition, a graded policy may accept you where a level policy won’t. The full benefit phases in over a waiting period, usually the first two years (some policies use three). If you die of natural causes inside that window, the carrier typically returns the premiums you paid plus interest. Accidental death is generally covered in full from day one.

Guaranteed Issue

Guaranteed issue policies ask no health questions at all. Everyone who applies is accepted. They use the same waiting-period phase-in as graded plans, and they cost more for the coverage you get. For someone who has been turned down elsewhere, they’re a way to get something in place.

Who Final Expense Insurance Fits

It fits most Tennesseans between about 50 and 85 who:

  • live on a fixed income and don’t want their children covering funeral costs
  • have been declined for traditional life insurance or find the price too high
  • already have a policy that wouldn’t cover a funeral on its own
  • want one monthly payment that never changes

It doesn’t fit everyone. A family that needs to replace an income or pay off a mortgage needs more coverage than a final expense policy provides. That’s a job for term or whole life. We’ll tell you plainly which one you need.

What It Costs

Four things set the premium: your age when you buy, your health, whether you use tobacco, and the benefit amount. Age matters most. Every year you wait raises the price, and a health change can move you into a more expensive type of policy.

Each carrier prices differently, and the gap between them can be large for the same person. That’s why we compare several before you commit. The quote is free and there’s no obligation to buy.

Burial Insurance or a Pre-Paid Funeral Plan?

A pre-paid funeral plan is a contract with one funeral home. It can make sense if you’ve already settled on that home and plan to stay in the area. A burial insurance policy pays cash to your family, so they can use it at any funeral home, in any state, and for any cost on the list above. The right answer depends on how settled your plans are. Ask us if you aren’t sure.

Does It Affect Medicare or Social Security?

No. A final expense policy is separate from Medicare. It doesn’t change your Medicare coverage or your Social Security payments. Medicare doesn’t pay funeral costs either. Social Security does pay a one-time death benefit of $255 to an eligible spouse or child. That doesn’t come close to covering a funeral.

If you’re planning when to claim your own benefits, our Social Security planning page explains how we help with that.

How We Help You Get Covered

  • We talk first. You tell us your age, your health, and what you want your family to be spared. We answer your questions without pressure.
  • We compare carriers. We check which companies would accept you and what each one would charge.
  • You choose. We help you complete the application by phone, by video, or at our Cookeville office.
  • You get a free-look period. Tennessee gives you time (10 days on most individual life policies) to review the policy and return it for a full refund.

Scotty Lewis holds the Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) designation, which includes training on the health, financial, and social issues that affect older adults. That matters when the decision you’re making will follow your family for years.

We meet clients in person in Cookeville, Crossville, Sparta, Livingston, and the counties around them. For everyone else in Tennessee, it’s a phone or video call. No cost for a consultation.

Final Expense Insurance Questions
Tennessee Families Ask Us Most

What is final expense insurance?

It’s a small whole life policy built to pay for funeral costs, final medical bills, and similar end-of-life expenses. People also call it burial insurance. Your beneficiary receives the benefit as cash.

How much burial insurance do I need in Tennessee?

A traditional Tennessee funeral runs $8,000 to $10,000, and cremation is often $5,000 to $7,000. A $10,000 to $15,000 policy covers most situations with room for final bills. Many families choose $15,000 to $20,000 so a few debts are covered too.

Can I get burial insurance if I have health problems?

Usually, yes. Graded benefit and guaranteed issue policies exist for people with serious conditions. You’ll pay more and the full benefit phases in over a waiting period, but you can still get coverage. We’ll check which carriers would accept you.

Do I need a medical exam?

Usually not. Most final expense policies use a short health questionnaire, and guaranteed issue policies skip health questions entirely.

What ages can buy final expense insurance?

Most carriers issue these policies to people between about 50 and 85. Age limits and benefit caps vary by company, so we check them for you.

Does the coverage expire, or does the price go up?

No. It’s whole life, so it stays in force for the rest of your life as long as you pay the premium. The premium is fixed when you buy.

How fast does my family get paid?

Many carriers pay within a few days to two weeks after a completed claim. Speed depends on the carrier and how quickly the paperwork is filed. We’ll tell you what to expect from the company you choose.

Is the death benefit taxable?

Life insurance death benefits are generally not subject to federal income tax for the beneficiary. Ask a tax professional about your own situation.

How is this different from regular life insurance?

The benefit is smaller and the application is simpler. Regular life insurance, like term or whole life, is built to replace income or protect a family’s finances. Final expense is built to pay end-of-life costs.

Do you serve my county?

Yes. We meet clients in person in Cookeville and the Upper Cumberland region, and we serve all 95 Tennessee counties by phone or Zoom. Call 931-316-1182 to get started.

Benefit amounts, eligible ages, and underwriting rules vary by carrier and policy. Coverage and eligibility are determined by the policy issued.

Scotty Lewis is an independent agent licensed across all 95 Tennessee counties, holding both the CSA (Certified Senior Advisor) and RSSA (Registered Social Security Analyst) credentials.
